T-Intersection

A T-intersection is part of road where two roads meet and one of them ends. A T-Intersection is not always in a "T" shape. T-Intersection is generally on the road to allow streets to connect to main roads.

How to know it's a T-Intersection?

When you are travelling on a road which ends on a HORIZONTAL or CURVED road, and your ending road is control by a GIVE WAY or STOP sign or marking, that is a T-Intersection.

Why I have to GIVE WAY or STOP at T-Intersection?

T intersection are designed to seperate merging traffic from ending road to ongoing road. All vehicles on the ending road are REQUIRED to GIVEWAY per the sign at the intersection. This is required to,

  • Streamline traffic flow

  • Safety of all road users

  • Safely merge and turn on the road

I'm at a T-Intersection and want to turn LEFT

  • Approach the T-Intersection INDICATING LEFT keeping left to the road at a speed you can stop safely behind the lines if required to

  • Look at the RIGHT SIDE of the road and check the traffic.

  • If traffic is flowing back to back, wait till you find a SAFE GAP(about 100 meter distance between 2 vehicles) or there is no back to back traffic and distance between two vehicle is long

  • Once you are satisfied that there is a SAFE GAP or distance between vehicle is long enough for you to merge, turn safely

  • Drive to the speed limit of the road

  • Check rear view mirror

  • When turning LEFT at t-intersection, you are not required to give way to any vehicle travellig straight or turning right from the LEFT SIDE of the T-Intersection.

  • You must give way to any pedestrian on the crossing on the road you are turning into

  • NEVER TRUST A VEHICLE INDICATING TO TURN LEFT FROM YOUR RIGHT SIDE AND YOU TURN LEFT, MAKE SURE THE VEHICLE IS ACTUALLY TURNING LEFT AND THEN PROCEED TO TURN.

I'm at a T-Intersection and want to turn RIGHT

  • Approach the T-Intersection INDICATING RIGHT keeping right to the road at a speed you can stop safely behind the lines.

  • Look at the RIGHT SIDE of the road and check the traffic

  • Look at the LEFT SIDE of the road and check the traffic

  • If traffic is flowing back to back on both sides, wait till you find a SAFE GAP(about 100 meter distance between 2 vehicles)  or there is no back to back traffic and distance between two vehicle is long on both sides of road

  • Once you are satisfied that there is a SAFE GAP or distance between vehicle is long enough on both sides of he road  for you to merge, turn safely

  • Drive to the speed limit of the road

  • Check rear view mirror

  • When turning RIGHT at t-intersection, you are REQUIRED to give way to any vehicle travellig straight or turning right from the LEFT SIDE of the T-Intersection.

  • You must give way to any pedestrian on the crossing on the road you are turning into.

What is LEFT TURN into RIGHT LANE?

  • No special requirement to indicate

  • You indicate LEFT only and can go staright into RIGHT or LEFT lane as asked to go to

What is RIGHT TURN into LEFT LANE?

  • You are turning RIGHT at T-Intersection and there are 2 lanes on the road you are turning into. You turn in the LEFT lane(2nd lane) that is called a RIGHT TURN into LEFT LANE.

Important to Remember

  • Failing to GIVE WAY to any vehicle at a T-Intersection could lead to dangerous situation and or a collission.
