Changes to Overseas License 

After 29th OCtober 2019, when using your overseas licence to drive in Victoria, all the road rules and laws apply to you. It’s also important to note that,

 

  • Your overseas licence needs to be current and valid 

  • If your overseas licence is in a language other than English, you also need to carry an English translation or international driving permit whenever you drive.

You can drive using your overseas licence when you first arrive in Victoria. If you are planning on staying for more than 6 months, you will need to convert your overseas licence to a Victorian licence within this time.

 

If you have an  international driving permit you can drive as long as the permit is 

:

  • Carried with your overseas licence

  • It is from the same country as your licence

  • In compliance with the United Nations convention for international driving permits

  • In English.

Changes after the COVID-19 Pandemic

If you are an interstate or overseas licence holder, you can continue to drive on your licence if you have not already been unsuccessful on a drive test.

If you were in Victoria prior to 29 October 2019:

  • you now have until 29 April 2021 to convert your licence to a Victorian one.

  • if you already had an appointment relating to your licence conversion booked and have been advised by VicRoads it's been postponed, VicRoads will contact you to re-book when the testing commences again.

  • If you had not yet made an appointment, you must book an appointment when testing for overseas licence conversion commences again.

Convert or Verify your Overseas License

  • To Convert your overseas license to victorian, the first step is to book an appointment with VicRoads for license verification if your country is not a recognised country list you will need to call VicRoads on 13 11 71 to book an appointment.

  • If you are from a recognised country, your appointment can be booked online on VicRoads website.

YOU CAN NO LONGER DRIVE SOLO WITH INTERSTATE OR OVERSEAS LICENSE IF YOU HAVE FAILED A DRIVE TEST WITH VICROADS.
