3 Points Turn

On the drive test, during stage 1, the LTO will ask you to perform a 3 Points Turn if they can not locate a car to do a reverse parallel park. The LTO will ask you to do 3 Points Turn while your car is in motion. They will ask as, "WHEN IT IS SAFE, PLEASE DO A 3 POINTS TURN FOR ME".

 

What is a 3 Points Turn?

3 Points Turn is a U TURN which is performed when the road is not wide enough for doing a U TURN.

Do I have to do a 3 Points Turn on the Drive Test?

3 Points Turn is a maneuver that your must know. It's a part of your DRIVE TEST in STAGE 1. You will be doing either a Reverse PArallel Park or a 3 Points Turn as the LTO finds it suitable on the road.

What are the REQUIREMENTS for a 3 Points Turn?

  • You must finish the 3 Points Turn in NO MORE than 2 minutes.

  • Must choose a SAFE place and follow the Signalling, Observation and Give Way rules.

  • Must KEEP CAR as close as possible to the KERB.

  • Can use a Driveway on the other side of the road or use KERB.

  • Can only move to the road to RIGHT, ONCE only.

  • Must not enter PRIVATE PROPERTY

  • Must NOT HIT the kerb hard enough to cause discomfort to vehicle occupants(no passenger is shaken).

  • Must NOT MOUNT the kerb(go over the kerb).

  • Must drive out on the CORRECT side of the road.

How to do the 3 Points Turn using KERB?

  • Look for a place FREE OF OBSTRUCTION and NO CAR ON THE OTHER SIDE OF ROAD which may obstruct your turn.

  • Indicate left and stop close to the KERB on the GUTTER or off the GUTTER making sure it's a NATURE STRIP not someone's DRIVEWAY..

  • Indicate RIGHT, check REAR VIEW MIRROR, look in the outside RIGHT MIRROR, give way to any oncoming or on going vehicle. 

  • When its safe, TURN STEERING FULL LOCK RIGHT, and roll your car to the RIGHT until the LEFT PILLAR A KISS THE KERB.

  • PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO GIVE WAY TO ANY VEHICLE ONCE YOUR CAR IS ON THE RIGHT AND ANY VEHICLE IS WAITING TO GO. THEY MUST WAIT UNTIL YOU FINISH YOUR 3 POINTS TURN.

  • Now, check all MIRRORS, indicate LEFT, turn steering FULL LOCK LEFT, check through rear windows and roll the vehicle looking at the outside RIGHT MIRROR aligning in the middle of the road, or the REAR RIGHT TYRE coming close to gutter in the BLIND SPOT MIRROR.

  • Now, check all the MIRRORS, indicate RIGHT, turn steering FULL LOCK RIGHT, and roll the vehicle.

  • Your vehicle should be on the road and on the other side of where you came to do a 3 Points Turn.

  • Check the REAR VIEW MIRROR for any traffic, continue driving.

How to do the 3 Points Turn using DRIVEWAY on the RIGHT?

  • Look for a place FREE OF OBSTRUCTION and NO CAR ON THE OTHER SIDE OF ROAD which may obstruct your turn.

  • Indicate left and stop close to the KERB on the GUTTER or off the GUTTER making sure it's a NATURE STRIP not someone's DRIVEWAY..

  • Indicate RIGHT, check REAR VIEW MIRROR, look in the outside RIGHT MIRROR, give way to any oncoming or on going vehicle. 

  • When its safe, TURN STEERING FULL LOCK RIGHT, and roll your car to the RIGHT until the the outside MIRRORS are in the middel of NATURE STRIP. This way you will NOT ENTER SOMEONE's PRIVATE PROPERTY.

  • PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO GIVE WAY TO ANY VEHICLE ONCE YOUR CAR IS ON THE RIGHT AND ANY VEHICLE IS WAITING TO GO. THEY MUST WAIT UNTIL YOU FINISH YOUR 3 POINTS TURN.

  • Now, check all MIRRORS, indicate LEFT, turn steering STRAIGHT, check through rear windows and roll the vehicle looking at the outside RIGHT MIRROR. When RIGHT MIRROR is on the ROAD, turn car FULL LOCK LEFT and RIGHT MIRROR aligning in the middle of the road  or the REAR RIGHT TYRE coming close to gutter in the BLIND SPOT MIRROR.

  • Now, check all the MIRRORS, indicate RIGHT, turn steering FULL LOCK RIGHT, and roll the vehicle.  

  • Your vehicle should be on the road and on the other side of where you came to do a 3 Points Turn.

  • Check the REAR VIEW MIRROR for any traffic, continue driving.

Important to Remember

  • Using kerbs is always a GREAT WAY to do a 3 Points Turn than using a Drive Way.

  • You can not stop your vehicle in someone's driveway to do a 3 Points Turn.
